How to use Past Simple (Regular verbs)

Past Simple is a tense used in English grammar to describe actions or events that happened in the past. It is also known as the Simple Past Tense. The origins of the Past Simple tense can be traced back to Old English, where it was used to describe completed actions in the past. Over time, the tense evolved and became a staple in modern English grammar.

Usage

The Past Simple tense is formed by adding -ed to the base form of regular verbs, while irregular verbs have their own unique past tense forms. For example, the past tense of the verb "walk" is "walked", while the past tense of the irregular verb "go" is "went". The Past Simple tense is used to describe actions or events that have already happened and are now completed. It is often used in storytelling, recounting past experiences, and reporting on news or events.

Regular Positive (or Affirmative) Form: S + V-ed

I worked at school. She worked at school.

We worked at school. He worked at school.

You worked at school. It worked at school.

Key words

Some of the words in the English language can work as pointers to the Past Simple and would work 90% of the time:

In addition to its use in storytelling and reporting, the Past Simple tense is also used in academic writing, particularly in history and literature. It allows writers to describe past events and actions with accuracy and detail, making it an essential tool for communicating information about the past. Overall, the Past Simple tense is a crucial component of English grammar, with a rich history and a wide range of applications in both spoken and written communication.
