Cupcake and Fairy Cake

When it comes to sweet treats, Americans and Brits have different names for the same thing. Cupcakes and fairy cakes are no exception. While the two are similar in appearance and ingredients, there are some key differences between the two.

Cupcake

In American English, a cupcake is a small cake, usually baked in a cup-shaped mould and frosted with a sweet icing. Cupcakes are believed to have originated in the United States during the 19th century. Since then, cupcakes have become a popular treat across the country.

Fairy Cake

In British English, a fairy cake is a small cake, usually baked in a cup-shaped mould and frosted with a sweet icing. Fairy cakes have a much longer history than cupcakes, with some sources claiming they have been around since the 1700s. Unlike cupcakes, fairy cakes are usually filled with jam and topped with a sprinkle of sugar.

Overall, cupcakes and fairy cakes are similar in appearance and ingredients, but differ in name and filling. While cupcakes are more popular in the United States, fairy cakes have a longer history in the United Kingdom. No matter what you call them, both cupcakes and fairy cakes are delicious treats that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth.
